Adaptive Kayaking Training Clinic

Last month, The Bridge welcomed Joe Moore, Founder of Adaptive Expeditions and partnered with the American Canoe Association (ACA), for an intensive adaptive kayaking training designed for recreation professionals. The workshop focused on providing participants with the knowledge and hands-on experience needed to make kayaking more accessible and enjoyable for individuals with disabilities.

Throughout the weekend, participants learned a variety of transfer techniques to safely assist athletes in getting in and out of kayaks. Training also covered proper athlete fitting, including how to identify and support key contact points within the boat using a range of adaptive materials and modifications. These skills help ensure comfort, stability, and safety while on the water.

Sunday's training emphasized practical application and problem-solving. Participants worked in teams to assess the unique needs of four athletes with disabilities and determine the most appropriate boat setup and modifications for each individual. They then had the opportunity to demonstrate their skills by building customized kayak configurations tailored to each athlete.

Adaptive Paddling on the Water

Once the boats were fitted, participants and athletes took to the water to practice essential safety and paddling skills. Training included capsize procedures, proper boat exits, and techniques for re-entering a kayak safely and effectively. Working together, participants gained valuable experience applying adaptive recreation principles in real-world situations.

Overall, the weekend was filled with learning, innovation, thoughtful discussion, and hands-on experience. Recreation professionals left with new ideas, practical skills, and increased confidence in their ability to provide appropriate accommodations and create meaningful paddling opportunities for athletes with disabilities.
